Big Sur is the kind of place you get emotionally attached to; it calls you back again and again. No matter what your religion or lack thereof, Big Sur’s powerful energetic pull and soul soothing properties cannot be denied. Situated on the most iconic stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway, the greater Big Sur region in Monterey County stretches from San Simeon in the south to Carmel in the north. Peace, quiet and Mother Nature are the main attractions here. Aside from the dramatic drive and infinite scenic photo ops, Big Sur is home to some incredible lodging options, legendary healing retreats and countless hiking trails traversing regal redwood forests. Of course there is good food on the menu, too.
When it comes to where to STAY, it really depends on budget and the experience you’re seeking—and availability, as everything books up in high season and on weekends year round regardless of price point. So plan ahead if you can or visit midweek in off-season.
On the highest end of the spectrum, Post Ranch Inn is hands-down the dreamiest place to hideaway in Big Sur. The award-winning property is world renowned for a reason—crazy beautiful accommodations built into the cliffs and magical tree houses perched on stilts; private soaking tubs outside every room; meandering pathways through meadows populated by grazing deer; impeccably attentive service; an extravagantly earthy spa with a thoughtfully curated menu that runs the gamut from traditional massage to Shamanic sessions; and a decadent dining program.
In the mid-range category, Glen Oaks is an updated roadside motor lodge that ticks the boxes of style, comfort and convenience. Treebones Resort is the ultimate glamping destination with a choice of yurts, treehouses, campsites and even a human nest. Deetjens Big Sur Inn is a homey, historic landmark favorite dating back to the 1930’s. The most affordable lodging option that also brings you closest to nature is camping, with a network of state park and private campgrounds to choose from.
If you’re feeling more in need of a true RETREAT, book a workshop at Esalen Institute. Remember the finale of Mad Men? That’s where Don Draper got his Om on. Esalen’s annual calendar is packed with more than 600 workshops led by gurus, healers and experts that specialize in a vast range of topics ranging from psychology and yoga to creative arts and massage. Retreats include lodging; wholesome daily meals prepared with ingredients grown onsite; and amenities including a swimming pool, outdoor massage set to a soundtrack of crashing surf and healing hot springs. If you want to experience Esalen without committing to a retreat or staying on property, there are limited massage appointments available to non-guests and the clothing optional mineral baths are open to the public by appointment after midnight.
Many of the hotels have solid DINING options, including the Wild Coast Restaurant and Sushi Bar at Treebones; Deetjen’s Restaurant; Big Sur Roadhouse across from Glen Oaks; and Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn. Big Sur Bakery is a must-stop for an incredibly satisfying breakfast, lunch or dinner. Nepenthe serves lunch and dinner and is legendary for the views alone (the veggie Ambrosia burger is pretty darn good, too).
